  • Anthrax is an infection that can affect cats. It is caused by the spores of a bacterial microorganism. Anthrax is usually spread through inhalation or ingestion of spores from infected meat, although cutaneous exposure can occur. It takes many spores to cause an infection that results in clinical signs of anthrax.

  • Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections are bacterial infections that are minimally or no longer responsive to commonly used antibiotics. Although these bacterial infections occur naturally, the frequent and/or inappropriate use of antibiotics accelerates the process.

  • This handout discusses aspergillosis in cats, an infection, growth, or allergic response caused by the Aspergillus fungus. If your cat becomes infected, it can be confined to the nasal passages (nasal aspergillosis), or it can spread throughout the body (systemic aspergillosis). The clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of both conditions are outlined.

  • Avian flu (also known as highly pathogenic avian Influenza or HPAI, avian influenza, or bird flu) is a viral infection caused by influenza type A viruses. It primarily affects wild birds and domestic poultry. The H5N1 strain is of particular concern because it can spread rapidly and potentially infect non-avian species, including mammals like dogs, cats, zoo animals and some wild carnivores. During outbreaks, keep pets and livestock away from wild birds and their droppings.

  • Babesiosis is a tick-borne infection caused by protozoal parasites of the Babesia genus. Babesia invades mammalian red blood cells, causing anemia. The disease primarily spreads through an infected tick's bite or when an infected dog with oral lesions bites another dog.

  • Pneumonia is inflammation of the lower respiratory tract. Bronchopneumonia generally refers to inflammation that begins in the lower airways. The terms are often used interchangeably. This article outlines common causes, signs, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

  • Dogs appear to be more susceptible to blastomycosis than many other species. The blastomycosis fungus targets the respiratory tract, although it may spread throughout the entire body. Cytology and/or histopathology are required to diagnose blastomycosis conclusively.
