  • White spot disease (also called ich) is an infection of freshwater fish caused by a single-celled, protozoan parasite. Affected fish have small, white cysts on their skin, gills, and fins. It is highly contagious between fish.

  • Flower essences are extracts from various types of flowers that are used to balance emotions. In animals, they are used to relieve emotional stress and anxiety. Flower essences are used in many different animals, including cats, dogs, horses, fish, birds, and other animals.

  • There are a variety of frogs kept as pets. Most frogs should not be handled frequently, as their skin is delicate. This handout summarizes the variety of sizes and colors of various pet frogs, as well as cage and cleaning requirements.

  • Furosemide is given by mouth or injection and is used on and off label to treat many conditions, including congestive heart failure and fluid retention. Common side effects include increased urination, diarrhea, or constipation. Do not use in pets that are allergic to it or in those that are unable to make urine.

  • There are multiple methods of inheritance that determine which characteristics (or phenotypes) are displayed by the offspring, including autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and sex-linked inheritance. There are also many polygenic traits (i.e., associated with multiple genes) as well as environmental factors that make it much more complicated to predict disease or the likelihood of passing disease onto offspring.

  • Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a long molecule that contains an organism’s entire genetic code. Every cell in the body contains two identical strands of DNA, and this DNA contains the “instructions” (genes) needed to create and run every part of the body. This handout summarizes how DNA works and how it directs the overall appearance, health, and actions of an animal.

  • Honey, topical (HoneyCure®, Medihoney®, Silver Honey®, L-Mesitran®, HoneyHeel®), is a medical-grade honey used in all animal species as an alternative or adjunctive therapy for skin conditions, including wounds due to injury and burn wounds.

  • Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) topical is used for the management of skin conditions such as wounds, abscesses, cuts, abrasions, skin irritations, ulcers, post-surgical incision sites, and burns. It may be used to prevent or treat bacterial skin infections, including methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). HOCl has antifungal and antiviral properties and may reduce inflammation, pain, and itching.

  • Itraconazole is given by mouth in the form of a capsule, tablet, or liquid to treat fungal infections in cats and for off-label treatment in dogs and small mammals. The most common side effects are anorexia, vomiting, liver toxicity, skin lesions, or limb and vessel swelling. It should not be used in pets with liver disease or low stomach acid production, and used with caution in pregnant, lactating, or pets with heart disease.
